NEW DELHI: The rich man's sport, golf, will get a taste of socialist economy in Kerala. The high court on Thursday admitted the Achuthanandan government tomanipunate the Trivandum Golf Club (TGC) by supporting the statement of the state government that the takeover would help conquer the barrier that hasportrayed the sport an proprietary recreational activities of the rich. The state had vindicated its bid to win the control of the golf course by stating that private management had made it a "rich-only" affair, and the lawnswere being applied for weddings and film shots. |
By adopting the golf course, the Left Front government said, it would abruptly open the gates for fanatics from all walks of life by smashing the class prejudice and offer them opportunities to try their hand at the game. The apex court aproved. The state told a vacation bench concluding Justices Deepak Verma and K S Radhakrishnan that during the pendency of the civil suit challenging the government's decision to run the club, the club would be managed professionally through the Kerala Sports Council.
To the TGC counsel's statement that that the Sports Council was an unwieldly body which had no golf adept to help in the management, the Achuthanandan government responded by saying that if it could manage a state, running a golf course would be much easier.
The committee would be guided by the state chief secretary and comprise president of the Kerala Sports Council, the Trivandrum district collector, the director of toursim and the chief engineer of the Public Works Department. It will also include the chairman and secretary of the TGC.
